ONE of the country’s largest ferrochrome producers, African Chrome Fields (ACF), has shut down its mining operations in Kwekwe, laying off over 500 workers. “Zimbabwe is home to about 12% of worlds chrome ore resources and due to the increase in demand for ferrochrome and other alloys we are set to be a significant contributor to the global chrome markets. “I applaud Africa Chrome Fields (ACF) for the plant which has significantly improved the country’s ferrochrome capacities,” he said.
African Chrome Fields has a chromite resource sufficient for its operations for at least the next two decades. The company currently produces in excess of 30 000 tonnes of chromite per month at six semi-mobile wash plants equipped with magnetic separators and nineteen 5-stage spiral washing plants, with further plans to expand.
